A question that always prays on my mind.

After Day of The Triffids, zombie holocaust etc and you have survived and beaten all your enemies and can continue a normal if some what less neighbourhood busy existence then aren't you still going to dies because what happens to all the nuclear reactors in ships, subs and power stations, missiles etc that are just left unattended that are liable to either start leaking or go hay wire eventually without a mass of tech staff Question

Answers on a postcard please Very Happy

Possibly some crazy militars launch that missiles and this forum and blog are a completely waste of time because we all are going to die by radiation and nuclear holocaust... What is clear is that nuclear stations are very dangerous without human control. Ooohh, we all are going to die!

That's what I thought Laughing Laughing Laughing I think it would be a real good ending to a film that the main characters survive and then they die from the society built before the invasion/ disease etc took place - oh the IRONY Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

Great idea, my friend! That could be the best end ever thought for a zombie flick.

Hello there!

Well, never consider something like that!
It could be like Chernobyl multiplied by 1,000

Though many modern nuclear plants/vehicles/ missile basements have "secured sealed containers" for a possible reactor meltdown, the harmful effects could appear (optimisticly) after half generation perhaps, and then, who knows?.

Ja! We´re doomed guys! Crying or Very sad

And it´s a very rough/ironic ending for a movie indeed!! which reminds me "28 weeks later", have you guys seen it?

I was put off originally with the Americans saving the day once again but it's got good reviews so I'm very interested in seeing it now.

Back to the initial subject.

I think there are a few more issues to consider aside from the nuclear one.

what about the hundreds or thousands of rotting corpses in every city? could bring to the survival population a variety of diseases and could be part of an aftermath annihilation. Not only air, but water could be also a very dangerous agent to spread infectious diseases.

Medicine would not last long and by consequence, it would not have sufficient to heal to as much ill people. So, with no air and water free of virus/bacteria, etc. no future is near. Hungry, ill and nomadic people will fight for the few food left as well as water and some other things.

In the end, I think the worst case scenario it´s just as described on the religious writings, one big plague after another...

frightening Sad

I think the 70's sci-fi had it right, you would have to find some were to settle as you would need to grow your own food again and have a clean water supply. There was BBC TV drama years ago which was based on quasi science fact that in between large mountains you could actually find a space that is free of radiation, the water may be purified through the surrounding rock etc. In the drama a man with a portable air making machine searches for such an area and ends up in Wales. In The Day of the Triffids the point is made that you would have to stop relying on the dead civilisation and relearn how to grow your own food but also how to make the knives and forks, how to farm, so that everything you use and eat you had knowledge of and could pass it on to future generations. One of the main priorities then would be to collect as many books on farming, working metal, finding metal, working wood etc etc etc, knowledge would be key to survival after the initial threat was gone.

You´re absolutely right Father!

That kind of theme repeated itself over and over again, and was very common in films and other forms of entertainment years ago during the Cold War. Some movies and TV shows asked the same questions, who will push the button first? when? what´s going to happen? and lots of what if´s...?

Another subject that I´m interested in is related with "off-the-grid" technologies. As you said before, we cannot rely on the private companies or stated owned companies that supply water, energy (electricity, gas, etc.).

On that scenario you must think on a SELF-SUSTAINABLE system, as you well said, you have to harvest your own crops, breed your own farm animals, provide your house with some comforts like electric light, heat, running water and control of wasted water, etc. Some "off the grid" stuff could be methane generators and solar panels (for cooking, heating, electric light and to power devices such as water pumps) the use of hydroponics (instead of traditional agriculture) etc.

In fact I´m doing a little "personal experiment" designing a house under "off the grid" parameters (not for an apocalyptical use, but for an ecological use jejeje) . The first step for this is to construct a methane generator which i´m going to use in a gas stove, I hope it works. Wink

Well, we have to study a lot my friend, let´s get started! Smile

See you around!

If I hear of a methane gas cooker exploding in Mexico I'll know who it is Laughing Laughing Laughing That is the definite sort of thing that always interested me in sci-fi books and film and in reality I think this is what I most got out of the Romreo zombie movies. It is not the zombies as much as the survival from the devastation and zombies mean you don't have to think to much of the moral implications of stopping them unless you knew them before. While in Day of the Triffids the reality of leaving the blind to starve or be eaten was actually much worse than flesh munching undead. What zombie movies mostly have is a very strong moral message which is surprising given the genre but it is there in Romeros work, 28 Days Later, Severed etc etc.

With a methane gas cooker? This is going to make your food smell like farts...
Laughing
Solar panels are the solution for me in Spain.
I need to have enough money to buy a little castle. I have thought about one in the north west of Spain, but now I realice that is better the one in San Pedro, Almería, South East of Spain. The castle is located close to a beach and a natural source of drinkable water. To get to the beach you hacve to walk ten kilometres between mountains. I think that we could put some of the Big Daddy's barricades and traps in that road. I'm worried about those zeds that could reach the beach through the sea... Maybe we could use some underwater fences: the ones that are used to prevent shark attacks. We also could make a door in that fences to get throuh it in order to go fishing. That kind of place provides: natural water, solar energy (Almería is one of the sunnyest places in Europe), vegetables for Johnny Very Happy , a place for swim and enjoy far of the "revenants"...
The only trouble I see are... the hippies! The place is plenty of hippies, specially in summer. People that instead of saying you "hello" at first sight they say "a cigarrette?". Laughing Those hippies, for me known as beggars or "mad people living in the streets", could be even more dangerous than zombies or fast zombies. Laughing

Jajajajaja Laughing Laughing Laughing yeah! I hope at least to do my best with the fireworks!

...

Certainly, this kind of movies give you a moral message or a social critic at the end, due to the fact that are the perfect setting to potray average people under extreme circumstances. That´s when the worst or the best of mankind comes out.

Even political issues comes out from this kind of movies, on "Land of the dead", Romero and Dennis Hopper talk about the similarities between Kaufman and G. W. Bush. !!! jeje Wink

well, see you around!
