What is horror and what is sci-fi as so many films now a days seem to combine both. Frankenstein was either Gothic Horror or science fiction. Easy to know Saw is horror and slasher movies but not so much with Zombie movies as if the source of the outbreak is manmade as in 28 Days Later is that then sci-fiction?
The Thing sci-fi or horror? Invasion of the Body Snatchers etc, etc....
The poll is very basic and I'm sure more options could be added. Predator is sci-fi and Alien is sci-fi but is Alien IV which has moments of Hellraiser torture, people brought in just to be fed to the Aliens etc. _________________ http://zombi-blogia.blogspot.co.uk/

I think that Alien is Terror. It was the tipical film of trapped with a monster but instead to use an old and rusty house, they use a spaceship.
Aliens, however is closer to the sci-fi because involves more action. |

I think you are right, what about Alien IV, with all the lab experiments that had gone wrong on bring Ridley back etc and the feeding of humans in Cryostasis that wake up just as their about to be eaten etc, surely that one is horror and Alien III, just rubbish _________________ http://zombi-blogia.blogspot.co.uk/

I really love when both comes together, hand to hand.
Alien: horror.
Aliens: action and sci-fi.
Alien 3: a bit dissapointing.
I'm sorry, but I didn't remember very well Alien IV.
The Thing: horror and sci-fi.
Hiden: sci-fi and action.
The night of the living dead: horror.
Plan nine from outer space: sci-fi and comedy.
The outer limits (series): sci-fi and horror.
Battlestar Gallactica (the old one): sci-fi, pure and hard sci-fi.
Battlestar Gallactica (the new one): sci-fi and action. _________________ Peter: Just rest, man. Save your strength.

Hello there!
Here´s my opinion.
I think genres are difficult to distinguish on this days. Many movies are´nt black or white anymore, mixed or crossover genres has been the trend since a few years in moder filmaking, and I think it is due to a more sofisticated and demanding audience.
But, anyway, many films can be labeled due to its core thematic, as well said by l0b0. CORE THEMATIC is one thing, RESOURCES to achieve the effect of core thematic it´s another thing.
The sci-fi as I understand it, it´s got to do more in a modern or futuristic, scientific/technological kind of atmosphere, the core thematic has to do with issues not from this time or at least not comprehensive by the means that are actually in use.
Horror has the only purpose to FRIGHTEN the audience by any mean necessary, mostly using archetypical figures.
Well, that´s my point of view, hope it works for you guys...

Wow! That's the best description yet. I think you are right doesn't matter if sci-fi setting if all it is there is to scare then it is a horror - eg The Cube. _________________ http://zombi-blogia.blogspot.co.uk/
