All religions, including Buddhism, stem from our narcissistic wish to believe that the universe was created for our benefit, as a stage for our spiritual quests. In contrast, science tells us that we are incidental, accidental. Far from being the raison d'être of the universe, we appeared through sheer happenstance, and we could vanish in the same way. This is not a comforting viewpoint, but science, unlike religion, seeks truth regardless of how it makes us feel. Buddhism raises radical questions about our inner and outer reality, but it is finally not radical enough to accommodate science's disturbing perspective. The remaining question is whether any form of spirituality can.

wow!
after that mighty display of high philosophical arguments i feel quite speechless...
Well, i think science has been developed for mankind to explain some of the so-called mysteries of the universe, but i seriously doubt that can get on well with religious way of thinking. Each one has their arguments to explain life and our surrounding reality. One is ruled by facts and the other by dogmatic belief or faith. it´s quite simple. The problem on each side is radicalism.
I think either of them, religion or science, are a complement of the entire life of a human being, because humanity are as eager for knowledge as for personal "spiritual" comfort. It´s just a "rule" of this Universe, duality patterns. Opposites coexist.

I don't like the name Brights as it denotes that they are better than others. Also whether god exists or doesn't is a philosophical argument and the scientists can not explain god / gods away but can say why they believe he/she/ they don't exist. In the end they've just added another word to the Lexicon of Atheism that may sound a bit more trendy but in the end doesn't move any debate on. Not a big fan though as mainly scientists are Brights, I've seen 28 Days Later, I know what they do to monkeys and know wonder they'd be scared if there's a god
On a lighter note, heavy rain in blighty yesterday, where I'm typing in my loft water was flooding down the chimney side, my mums ceiling collapsed at her home and a friends house was nearly under water - global warming!! I'm building an ark to cover all bets _________________ http://zombi-blogia.blogspot.co.uk/

I agree with you father, Many scientist or people near science has that fixation for attacking the so-called "magic thinking" or calling themselves skeptics to criticize religion or spiritual beliefs. As I said before, science don´t rule the entire human existence, is only a complement that balance human life. Unfortunately, modern and trendy "critic thinking", "skepticism" or even "atheists" are the ugly face of science. Five or ten years from now, brights will change name and face, and another way of thinking will lead the trend, and so on and so on...
On the other side...
You had a flooding and call it a "lighter note" (¿?) jaja
well, hope your mum is ok.
And yes, the good thing about a massive outbreak of zombies is the fact that global warming will suddenly stop and our environment will back to normal jejeje , not everything will be lost after all!!!

Now that's a positive note, unless zombies are very gassy after eating all that human flesh and act like cows and mass animal production that apparently are the real reason for global warming or is that just when G. Bush speaks out of his most competent end _________________ http://zombi-blogia.blogspot.co.uk/

well, the only thing left is that starvation finish them in a couple of months. that little time investment will be nothing compared with Global warming whose process took many years to reach where we are now.

Speaking in years found how many since religious people think we were created in a book I'm reading at the moment.
Adam -
Noah 1200
Abraham 2342
Moses 2907
Jesus 4832
Muhammad 5432
No wonder fundamentalists like Bush are scary, they find it very hard to have Jesus walking around with dinosaurs!!!!!
